A word from our Program Director...

Dear prospective resident,

As an Emergency Physician, there is true joy in what I do.  We get to see an undifferentiated patient and figure out how to help them in their time of need.  There is a wonderful opportunity to give your best to someone who is at their worst.  Whether it is an illness, an injury, or just the need to make sure they’re alright, people count on you and your team to do the right thing for them.  EM is a calling and if you are reading this, you have likely been called to the medical service of people on their worst day. What an honor and privilege.  To be able to do this while teaching residents and students while watching them grow into excellent Emergency Physicians has been an amazing privilege and gift.

We understand that you have spent a lot of time devoted to learning the art and science of medicine.  Residency is the place where all of that comes together in the service of others.  Finally you are taking all of that knowledge and learning how to effectively apply it to the patient in front of you.  You learn how to alleviate someone’s suffering while giving them the care that they desperately need.  We may not always see it this way when a shift gets busy, but that really is what we get to do.  Working in a place where this is the focus is one of the best ways to ensure career longevity and ongoing growth.  Knowing that you are coming to work to meaningfully serve your community is a wonderful feeling.

At St. Joseph, this is our focus.  We are a hospital with all the resources and talent needed to take excellent care of our patients and to foster your education.   Here, you will be exposed to all of the pathology that you’ll see wherever you work after training.  With our faculty, you’ll learn from every patient you care for.  We want to recruit residents who will thrive in the service of others.  As a graduating medical student, it is important to find a program that has the supportive environment and right mindset to help you thrive and become the best possible physician.  This will give you dividends for years to come.

We are a “learn-by-doing” residency and you will have plenty of opportunity to acquire all of the necessary skills to become the best EM doc out there.  After training with us you will succeed in any environment, no matter how challenging and know, “I’ve got this”.

At St. Joseph we thrive as a community hospital, and we are supported by the Good Samaritan University Hospital Department of Graduate Medical Education.  We share resources, as good neighbors do, to take care of those who need our help.

During this residency you will be exposed to Trauma, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Toxicology, Critical Care, Anesthesiology, EMS, board preparation, procedure labs, M&M, Simulation, Grand Rounds, Quality Improvement, ultrasound workshops, collaborative conferences with other specialties, Journal Club, one-on-one mentoring, and much more.

At St. Joseph, you will excel amid university level healthcare within a friendly and supportive hospital.  We hope you give us a chance to show you what we have to offer.

We are confident you’ll like what you see.
